Port Douglas - North Queensland

Port Douglas is only an hour by bus north of Cairns and we had been recommended a visit by Aussie mate, Peter W.... and so off we went for a couple of days. And it was delightful!

Quite small, quaint and pretty - right on the edge of the rainforest and situated on a fresh water mangrove inlet. A lovely little apartment proved a super base and we could walk everywhere, which was even better.

This silly piece of artwork/sculpture was on the roof of one of the quayside fish restaurants.. it made us smile!

Fantastic fish and chips for supper the first night! Back to some basic - but - excellent food! Instead of cod we had something similar - known locally as blue salmon?

We went for an evening cruise (bubbly and nibbles now becoming mandatory with everything we sign up for). We went up the inlet on an aptly named boat..... in search of crocodiles, and found on less than 200 yds from the edge of town... a bit scary!

The Lady Douglas... skippered by baby Kate, the daughter of the real captain and his wife, who are British marine biologists who settled there 3 or 4 years ago - and came across a business opportunity which allows them several months off a year and combines with their hobby/university degrees.... perfect!

We also saw mud skipper, kites, ospreys and beautiful fish eagles.

The second evening we had supper on the quayside and in the space of only 5 minutes watched the weather change from this.....

to this ....

but no sooner had the squawl arrived, than it had gone again and we managed to walk back to our pad without a soaking.

Port Douglas was a charming township and a lovely surprise.

Thanks for the recommendation, Peter, we loved it!

Now back to Cairns.... and Christmas!!
