Australia - Melbourne & The Great Ocean Rd

We landed in Melourne at 6 am, picked up a hire car (not an AM DB7 - but rather a Toyota Corolla) and headed off in the direction of Warnambool, about 3.5 hrs drive from the airport and our start point for the drive along the coast - The Great Ocean Road.

We thought we would try some different accommodation - a delightful self-catering, air conditioned cabin on a campsite (for which I hasten to add we paid extra for the a/c). We needn't have bothered... it was bl....y freezing!

But after a good night's sleep we set off via the Bay of Islands towards the Twelve (now only 11) Apostles etc, stopping off at Apollo Bay and then overnight at Wye River - again for the cabin/camping experience.

The Twelve Apostles - you can see just beside Diane's elbow where the Tweflth one fell down and now there's only 11. Others are looking decidedly dodgy.. so maybe only ten before long.

and our introduction to a wild Mummy& baby Koala Bear, who took refuge in a tree outside our cabin whilst a very lustful Daddy Koala tried serenading Mum.. she wasn't impressed.

Ahhh... aren't they sweet!

Then we set off again in the direction of Torquay (home of all the Surf Clothing Outlets - and a little retail therapy) before arriving back in Melbourne.

Our stay in Melbourne was very short, but it is a vibrant city and smaller than we expected.... It has trams... big time! Some old and some new and we enjoyed buzzing around on them. Our hotel was very central so we plodded around on foot quite a bit too, eating in Chinatown the first night.

Next day we met up with Aussie friend Peter Weeda and his partner Jen,
who showed us the sights of St Kilda.. a bustling seaside resort, funfairs, restaurants, street market, etc., etc. Great fun. We were pleased to be able to spend some time with some locals and Peter also introduced us to a fantastic Thai Restaurant in South Melbourne that evening. A very big thank you to our Aussie friends for your kindness and hospitality.
