South Island (Part 2)

On leaving Queenstown we headed off in the direction of Christchurch, taking in Lake Tekapo and Akaroa on the way.

Lake Tekapo is the most amazing turquoise blue colour - caused by the glacial deposits, but sadly we didn't get any good shots because it was another grey and drizzly day. But we took the chance to do the shopping on bikes... made a change! We did visit the Church of the Good Shepherd which is internationally famous and a popular venue for weddings of all denominations. There is no stained glass window behind the alter, just a plain glass window looking out on to the lake, because that in itself is a worthy spectacle. We also visited a statue of a shepherd dog which was commissioned to honour all the sheepdogs over many, many years which had helped to settle the difficult terrain as suitable sheep grazing.

And in this whole area we were treated to the most magnificent displays of wild lupins.

This next bit is for our French friends - Veronique and Valerie......

We then headed off to Akaroa, which as you will see from the photos is a little piece of France in NZ. A French explorer landed and hoped to settle the land for the Republic, but that same month The Treaty had been signed by the Mauris handing the country to good ol' Queen Victoria.... but the French stayed under British rule, creating their own little piece of La Belle France.
